Today
Upon the formation of the National Guard, the United Train of Artillery was one of a few RI Militia Companies which chose to remain Independent Chartered Militia and elect its own officers. With the passage of time, and the ending of the reliance upon the old militia system to raise armies, the function of the Company changed. Though still considered part of the Armed Forces of the State of Rhode Island pursuant to Rhode Island General Laws, Title 30, the Rhode Island Organized Militia's function has become ceremonial and the Company's State role confined to its activities as a part of the Rhode Island Council of Historic Chartered Military Commands with occasional duties involving honor guards for State functions.
The Company's interests today are varied in nature. Our principal activity is enactments of living history, designed to preserve the military traditions and history of the Company by educating and interacting with the public. As a member of the Continental Line, the Company takes part in reenactments all along the eastern seaboard, focusing on the earliest incarnation of the Company. The Company also engages in educational presentations, shooting competitions, historic restoration, historical research, and projects to support our nation's troops and honor our veterans.
The Company is very different from most organizations involved in living history. Most organizations, however well they do so, only portray a particular unit from the past. The United Train of Artillery does not portray anything, it is the same Company that fought in the American war for Independence and the Civil War. The Company is in its 238th year and its current members take our custodial duties seriously. We want our members to honor the memory of our forebears while being safe and having fun. Traditionally, the militias in Rhode Island have been centers of community activities as well as military organizations. We believe that that particular tradition is well represented by the UTA of today.
